Human Potential – Chasing the Dream vs Enacting Effortless Unfoldment

ABSTRACT:

My Intent is to contrast two very different approaches to tapping latent potential:

I. The approach common to the human potential movement as I encountered it during my life coaching training via mixed methods and approaches to serving the unfoldment of latent human potential…

II. The other is the approach to tapping human potential as I have encountered it through my training with the Integral Theory program at JFK.

Emphasis: Ill be contrasting these two approaches with an emphasis on states of consciousness, but drawing from a diverse set of maps afforded to us by the AQAL map. Within this context I will demonstrate how the more dated approach to human development tends to overlook state training, development and mastery as a means for liberating human potential, how these elements are complementary to such an endeavor, and sample practices for each.

My approach to general (aka mundane) states, phenomenal states and state-stages of consciousness will be to make distinctions between these and then place emphasis on phenomenal states. I will establish a frame of reference through this set of distinctions and then “populate that frame of reference” (citation needed) by pulling from examples in a conversation that unfolded via a personal conversation that includes my opinions about an astrologers advice towards saggitarians and dissects these examples through the contrast between my more dated approach to human potential actualization and a more integrally informed approach to recognize how my understanding has changed and then illuminate how learning the AQAL model has helped me bring more nuance into my understanding. The net effect will be to create a context through which the reader will understand some of the subtle and not so subtle differences between these two approaches and learn a way to apply and experience those differences themselves through specific practices.

Ways of Seeing/Interpreting the world

Dignity and Disaster of all perspectives/worldviews

In this section I will outline how I came to understand that each perspective available to us is intrinsically partial and how seeking to be aware of both the dignity and disaster of a given perspective or worldview can aid in understanding.

Stages of consciousness

In this section I will outline an example of two different stages of consciousness and how they see and interpret the same phenomena. The intent is to introduce a dose of “healthy skepticism” about blanket interpretive mechanisms that are often overlooked and thus to demonstrate how curiosity and a “beginners mind” can be helpful in interpreting phenomena such as the process of tapping latent human potential.

Polarlization and Absolutization

In this section I will address the difference between polarizing and absolutizing various phenomena and provide examples about how how the combination of polarization with absolutization can inhibit awareness and how we might move out of such tendencies. This will include a practice for recognizing such a pattern in ourselves and how we might go about unpacking the assumptions arising from such subtle interior cognitive tendencies. I will likely include practices arising from understandings of mutual resonance or cultural perspectives such as asking for and receiving feedback in this section as well as an example that illuminates a common polarization triad (the relationship between victim, villain, hero perspectives) (citation needed). I will also likely include an example related to problematization.

Tapping latent human potential

In this section I will outline the difference in emphasis between “chasing goals” and “effortless resolution” that arises from awareness of states of consciousness and practices related to state mastery with a sample practice and means for applying it to a topic matter that the reader is present to. I will also address egocentrism vs sociocentrism, complexity vs simplicity and power over vs power with polarities.

Means of enactment

In this section I will outline various means for applying the concepts we have discussed until this point. This section will either be separate or interwoven into the paper and will likely address attention training, working with identity and working with groking more complexity in a given phenomena or situation.
